Trendway Supports Area Students with 2011 George and Lucile Heeringa Scholarships

Holland, MI . . . Trendway Corporation recently announced the annual George and Lucile Heeringa Scholarship awards. Created in honor of George and Lucile Heeringa, the company’s founding proprietors and parents of current Board Chairman Don Heeringa, the scholarships assist with the higher education expenses of area young people. Since 1993, Trendway has granted $355,000 in awards. This year $35,500 was awarded to students throughout the greater Holland area.
“It is always such a pleasure to be able to help these outstanding young people achieve their educational goals,” says Don Heeringa, Trendway’s chairman. “Not only do we honor my parents’ memory and the values they held dear, but we also encourage and support area young people in their pursuit of higher education.”
Scholarships are awarded in several categories. The George and Lucile Heeringa Trendway Scholarship provides $1,500 scholarships to children of full-time Trendway employees. Students eligible for these one-time annual scholarships maintain full-time, uninterrupted study in an accredited college or university in the United States for the subsequent school year. The eleven 2010 Trendway Scholarship recipients are Josh Burley, son of Russ Burley and Tracy Warber, attending Grand Rapids Community College; Jessica Henrickson, daughter of Jon and Kris Henrickson, attending Central Michigan University; Kassandra Hulst, daughter of Merl Hulst, attending College for Creative Studies; Justin LaLonde, son of Bruce and Cherie LaLonde, attending Grand Valley State University; Angeline Ok, daughter of Samnang and Nary Ok, attending Western Michigan University; Mallory Overway, daughter of Rodney Overway, attending Grand Valley State University; David Pritchard, son of Steve Pritchard, attending Michigan State University; Christian Stratton, son of Kevin Stratton; Cody Sprick, son of Todd and Taressa Sprick; Christopher Baker, son of Steve and Deb Baker, attending Grand Valley State University; Heidi Rojo, daughter of Rita Hernandez and Gustavo Rojo, attending Grand Rapids Community College.
Trendway also awarded eighteen George and Lucile Heeringa Continuing Education Scholarships to students who received a 2010 Trendway Scholarship, reapplied in 2011, and maintained personal and scholastic excellence. These $500 scholarships were given to the following individuals: Brooke Blake, daughter of John Blake, attending Ferris State University; Amber Brunmeier, attending Western Michigan University and Zach Brunmeier, attending Michigan State University, children of Sandy Brunmeier; Jennifer Crist, attending Ashford University, daughter of Vera James; Alice Dabandons, attending Ferris State University, daughter of Mousena Dabandons; Emily Dykstra, attending Loyola University – Chicago, daughter of Thomas Dykstra; Shanel Ferguson, attending Grand Valley State University, daughter of Patti and Buddy Ferguson; Jason Henrickson, attending Davenport University, son of Jon and Kris Henrickson; Kerstine Lundy, attending Valparaiso University, daughter of Dan and Leonie Lundy; Miles Martinus, attending Grand Rapids Community College, son of Richard Martinus; Drew Moll, attending Baker College, son of Jeri Moll; Katherine Pritchard, attending Central Michigan University, daughter of Steve and Jody Pritchard; Dylan Reilly, son of Brian Reilly, attending Indiana Tech; Sarah Reinink, daughter of Rod and Sally Reinink, attending Bowling Green State University; Nicole Schippa attending Baker College, daughter of Dan and Evelyn Schippa; Brian Schreur, attending Grand Rapids Community College, and Jenna Schreur, attending Ferris State University, children of Gerry and Cindy Schreur; Stephanie Sprick, daughter of Todd and Taressa Sprick, attending Michigan State University.
The George and Lucile Heeringa Community Scholarship is offered to seniors in each of the Holland area high schools. The one-time, $1,000 scholarships are awarded to students who will maintain full-time, uninterrupted study in an accredited U.S. college or university for the following school year. The 2010 recipients of the Community Scholarship are: Grand Haven, Blake Shultz and Xinyi Ou; Holland Christian, Ni Lang; Holland High, Alexa Bakker; Zeeland High West, Kristen Soeters; Zeeland High East, Grace Tesfae; West Ottawa, Anne Brunelle, Ryan McCormack and Heidi Ivette Rogo.
In addition, one scholarship was awarded to the Kendall College of Art and Design. The recipient of this $1,000 scholarship was Jenny Coburn of Gaylord, Michigan.
All scholarship winners were selected on the basis of scholastic aptitude, leadership, community involvement, volunteer activities, and talent by a panel of outside educators. Applications for scholarships are available annually in March. The Heeringa Scholarship Award luncheon was held for recipients and their parents on Wednesday, June 1, at Trendway’s facility on Quincy Street in Holland.
